Pest Control for Your Boat
Summertime is boat season, and that means it's also prime time for pests. Bugs and rodents can quickly become a problem on your boat, making it dirty and uncomfortable. Some pests can even cause damage to the various materials and electronics!
But there are some simple things you can do to prevent pests from taking over your boat.
Here at Boat Masters Marine, we strive to make your life easier. We gathered up the following tips for boat pest control. For more boating advice or to explore boats for sale, visit our dealership. We are located in Akron, Ohio. We also proudly serve those in Youngstown and Cleveland, Ohio.
Clean Your Boat
First, keep your boat clean. A clean boat is less attractive to pests than a dirty one. Be sure to sweep up any food crumbs or spills right away. You should also empty garbage cans frequently and keep them lidded.
Inspect Your Boat Regularly
Inspect your boat regularly for signs of pests. Look for droppings, nests, or chewing damage. If you see any evidence of pests, take action immediately to get rid of them.
Use Pest-Proof Storage Containers
Store food and supplies in pest-proof containers. Bugs and rodents can easily chew through paper or plastic bags. Glass jars or metal containers will keep them out.
Keep Your Boat Dry
Bugs and rodents like damp, dark places. So do mold and mildew. To help prevent all of these, keep your boat dry. Wipe up any water spills right away and make sure there are no leaks. Ventilate areas that tend to be damp.
Use Pest Repellents
There are a number of effective pest repellents on the market. You can use them to keep pests away from your boat. Be sure to follow the directions carefully, and always keep repellents out of reach of children and pets.
One approach is to mix cayenne pepper and ammonia. Rub or spray the mixture around the edges of your boat, which will help deter pests. It's wise to wear gloves and goggles while applying the mixture because you don't want to get it in your eyes! The smell should help keep pests away, but you'll want to re-apply it about every month.
By following these simple tips, you can enjoy a pest-free boat all summer long. If you are still in the market for a boat, check out the selection at Boat Masters Marine.
