You’ve probably heard of a pontoon. But have you ever heard of a tritoon? At Boat Masters Marine, we’re here to make the boat buying process easier for you. That’s why we’ve created the following guide breaking down the differences between pontoons and tritoons. Read on to learn more and give us a call at our Akron, Ohio location with any questions. We are proud to serve Youngstown and Cleveland as well.

What’s the Difference?

Let’s start by laying out the key differences between the two crafts. Pontoons are named after the tubes that give them their flotation. These tubes are attached to the bottom of the hull and may lead to better stability and handling. Standard pontoons come with two tubes whereas tritoons, as the name suggests, come with three tubes. Besides this difference, the two vessels look very similar.

Size

Tritoons are the bigger option. This means they can accommodate more people. They can even fit up to 25 passengers depending on the model. The size of a tritoon makes it perfect for larger boating parties. They also pack more power since they have a bigger engine. While pontoons can still have enough room for you and your family, you’ll need to make sure everyone has enough space to be comfortable. Before buying a craft, think about how many people you plan on bringing along.

Expenses

Pontoons are the more affordable option. On average, you’ll find there to be a $15,000 difference between the two types of boats. If you’ll make good use of your tritoon, the price increase will be worth it. Think about your finances before you commit to either vessel. Don’t forget to factor in additional costs like maintenance fees. This will help you form a solid budget that won’t break the bank.

Environment

Another important factor to consider when buying a pontoon or tritoon is where you plan on taking your craft. Large, choppy waters will be more manageable in the bigger tritoon. You’ll stay grounded even as the waves start to roll in.

On calmer waters like a lake or river, a pontoon will work just fine. If the water is particularly crowded, you’ll benefit from having a smaller vessel. Make sure to keep in mind where you’ll take your boat before you buy a model.
